Travel Inspiration - Castles in Ireland Photos | Architectural Digest

Travel Inspiration - Castles in Ireland Photos | Architectural DigestFrom crumbling medieval strongholds to elaborately restored fortresses, in Ireland’s lush green lands castles are practically as common as whiskey and wool fisherman’s sweaters. Most of them have bones that date from as early as the 12th century, done up with artful additions and expansive new gardens by Victorians in the 1800s. With such dignified stature Irish castles have cropped up time and again in pop culture—as the setting of Excalibur or the album art for Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy—and have housed notables ranging from the usual dukes and duchesses to Fred Astaire’s beloved sis. With St. Patrick’s Day upon us, we’ve rounded up 11 magnificent castles from the Emerald Isle.

Shown: Built in the 1300s, the Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland is surrounded by steep drops, making it only accessible by bridge. Though the site is now ruined, its legacy lives on in the album art for Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy.
